DoverPhila Partners with Rotary to Enhance the Pond at Tuscora Park

DoverPhila Federal Credit Union has partnered with the New Philadelphia Rotary Club to provide a $5,000 donation that will go towards a project to enhance the pond at Tuscora Park.

The monetary donation along with other donations from area organizations will go towards the construction of a boardwalk stretching 140 feet across the pond and features a gazebo and a plaza that are both handicap accessible. The construction’s design will provide a convenient seating area for visitors, shade for daytime comfort, and decorative lighting for evening enjoyment. The overall goal of the project is a more ideal park experience through an enhanced, scenic view of the pond and its wildlife.

New Philadelphia Rotary hopes to raise enough funds by the end of the year to start the project so the dedication can coincide with Tuscora Park’s 100th anniversary on Memorial Day 2017.

The Rotary carries out its Tuscora Park efforts through the nonprofit RTY, Inc., which is recognized as a tax-exempt organization under Internal Revenue Service rule 501(c)(3).

For more information about the project or about making a donation, send an email to information@newphiladelphiarotary.com or call Sam Hitchcock at 330-340-7910.

Three Things to Know Before Purchasing a New Car

When purchasing a vehicle, there are many things to consider before taking the leap such as the pros and cons to buying new cars versus the pros and cons to buying used cars.

Before purchasing a vehicle, think about what the daily use of the vehicle will be, the amount of trunk space you will need, and how much seating space you should have. Make sure the options you are considering are practical reflections of how you will use the car. You may love the look of a larger vehicle, but do you have a need for that much seating? If you do not need that much space then that particular car may not be right for your daily commute and errands.

After you have considered the personal aspects of which car to purchase, move on to the less subjective parts of the process such as depreciation, cost-to-own, and affordability.

Depreciation
Most cars depreciate at about 15% per year. With new cars, there is about a 20% depreciation rate as soon as you drive off the lot. You should consider this before you decide to buy a new car, especially if you cannot afford a large down payment. Chances are you will be upside down on your car loan almost immediately if you’re financing the entire cost.

Cost-to-own
Consider the true cost to own the car you are considering. There are always costs when owning a vehicle such as insurance, fuel, maintenance, and more. Maintenance costs vary by manufacturer and model. Some manufacturers have better reputations than others when it comes to maintenance. Some new cars come with “free” maintenance plans for the first couple of years or for a certain number of miles.

Affordability
Shop around. Do not guide yourself solely by what the dealership is willing to lend you. People are often blindsided by an attractive low monthly payment that is usually tied to a super-long loan term – do not be fooled. Consider all aspects of financing so the total amount you are going to end up paying for that vehicle when it is all said and done is something that is affordable. That’s what matters.

Before you even step on the lot, visit DoverPhila Federal Credit Union. As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, we offer low loan rates and flexible terms that fit your lifestyle, and we are happy to explain the lending process and answer any questions you may have about loans.

DoverPhila Offers Credit Counseling to Members

Although credit counseling can provide financially troubled consumers with valuable assistance, some firms—like the ones you see advertised on late-night television—may be misleading about who they are, what they do, or how much they charge. Some credit counseling services promise results they can't deliver such as lowering your interest rates, monthly payments, or overall debt by an unrealistic amount. They may also make false promises to eliminate accurate negative information from consumers' credit reports.

At DoverPhila Federal Credit Union, our members can receive free – and honest – credit counseling services to help get their finances back on track. We can help you prepare a budget analysis, find where you might be able to cut expenses, start you on the on the right path to saving money, and help provide manageable goals to help pay off debt. DoverPhila can provide the guidance you're looking for without the high-cost fees of the credit repair clinics you see advertised.

For more information about DoverPhila Federal Credit Union’s credit counseling services call financial counselor, Fred Weingarth, at 330-364-8874 extension 141.

DoverPhila Federal Credit Union Encourages Youth to Get Financially Fit

Financial literacy is a crucial life skill for young people, but it is one that too few are learning. As a credit union, one of our founding principles is concern for community. The theme of the week-long savings event is “Credit Union Strong.” For that week, DoverPhila is focusing on helping youth, ages 17 and under, to become more financially fit by encouraging them to strengthen their money skills and pump up their savings through deposits made to their Kids Club or cu$aver accounts. Important Information Regarding Accounts and Automatic Transactions

Do you have a direct deposit or an automatic payment associated with one of your accounts? If so, please continue reading to learn some important information regarding the account information you provide to third parties and the accounts you should use for automated transactions.

Automated Clearing House (ACH) is an electronic network for financial transactions in the United States. The large volume of daily credit and debit transactions processed by ACH causes it to be account-number driven. You must provide both an accurate and complete account number for automated activity to guarantee transactional items will post the way they are intended. The 6-digit base member number only correlates to your savings account. All nine (9) digits of your account number must be provided to third parties to ensure funds are deposited to or withdrawn from your checking account. If you fill out a form through your employer and check a box for your checking account to receive automated transactions, you still need to provide the entire 9-digit checking account number.

A checking account is a “demand” account designed to allow members to have immediate access to funds and a savings account is an account strictly intended for members to save funds. Federal law (Regulation D) limits the accessibility of funds because of these account differences. The most notable limitation is the maximum of six (6) preauthorized withdrawals and transfers per month. These withdrawals and transfers include those made online, by telephone, by ACH, or by automatic (overdraft) transfer.

DoverPhila Federal Credit Union does not offer an overdraft account for a savings account because it is not a demand account, but we do offer overdraft account protection for a checking account. If you use your savings account as a demand account, it can result in an overdrawn savings account, NSF fees, and returned/unpaid items.

It is always good to educate yourself with what is going on in the banking world especially when it comes to financial matters regarding your accounts. DoverPhila wants you to be able to access your accounts and funds without issues. If you have questions regarding your account, please contact a DoverPhila member service representative by calling 330-364-8874.

Early registration is currently underway until Friday, March 18, 2016 with fees of $25 for adults and $15 for kids. Race-day registration fees are $30 for adults and $20 for kids. Interested participants can register at any of the five Tuscarawas County Public Library locations or print a form at www.tusclibary.org and mail it to the library.

Participants will receive goodie bags the day of the race. Those who take advantage of early registration will also receive a Bookin’ It 5k t-shirt. Medals designed by Warther’s Woodcarving will be awarded to top participants. Awards for the best ‘80s costumes will also be given.

All proceeds from the event support the Tuscarawas County Public Library’s Mobile Services that benefit elementary students throughout the county. For more information, call 330-364-4474 ext. 221.

How GAP Insurance Benefits You

Did you know that a new car can be worth 30% less in 3 months than the day it was purchased? Car owners often assume that if their car is totaled then it will be replaced with the amount they paid for it, or at least the amount they owe on their auto loan or lease. Unfortunately, this is not true – but for some auto owners, there might be a solution. It’s called GAP Insurance.

Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) Insurance offers valuable protection for your auto loan or lease by covering the difference (GAP) between the balance of what you owe on your car and the current market value. In most instances, GAP will also pay your regular insurance deductible.

Here’s an example of how it works! You recently purchased a new car for $21,000. Your down payment was $1,500 and your auto payments are $350 per month. Six months later, you are in an accident and you total your vehicle. Your insurance company pays you the current market price (actual cash value) of your car, which they deem as only $15,000. With your down payment and your six monthly auto payments, you still owe $17,400 on your car. The value your insurance company is giving you is lower than the amount you still owe on your loan or lease payoff. The difference, or gap, between the two is $2,400. With Guaranteed Asset Protection, you receive help with this financial gap. Without the insurance, the $2,400 comes out of your pocket.

If you find yourself in a situation where you owe more on your vehicle than what it is worth, made a low down-payment, have a high interest rate on your loan or lease, or rolled over other costs into your car payment then you should consider GAP Insurance. It’s a great resource!

At DoverPhila, we offer this valuable protection at a very inexpensive cost and if you are not satisfied then we will return your premium if you cancel within 60 days. Also, as an added benefit of purchasing GAP through DoverPhila, you are provided with the Auto Advantage Program that includes an Auto Deductible Reimbursement (ADR) benefit for up to five (5) years. ADR provides members with reimbursement of their primary auto insurance deductible (up to $500) per loss (limit of two losses per year) when a claim is filed and paid by the auto insurance company for a covered vehicle titled to the primary borrower. Along with ADR, members also receive Personal ID Restoration Consulting and Warranty Registration Service.

For more information on our Guaranteed Asset Protection Insurance and its benefits, contact our loan department by calling 330-364-8874.

DoverPhila Commits to Five-Year Pledge for Youth Character Education Program

DoverPhila Federal Credit Union has committed to a five-year pledge for Leader’s Edge Anti-Virus Youth Character Education program for area middle school students. The pledge provides a $5,000 per year contribution to help supply the required course materials for students, cover the costs of coordination fees, and provide trained Anti-Virus mentors in the classroom.

Anti-Virus is a 10-week program that is taught in one class period a week within the regular school day. The students involved with the curriculum focus on developing positive life traits to build good character and to become a positive influence on other youth. The program is free to participating schools through Leader’s Edge and area pledges.

“The Anti-Virus program is an excellent program,” said Jack Dooling, Chief Executive Office and President of DoverPhila Federal Credit Union. “This commitment allows us to give to a program that improves the lives of our youth so we can continue to build a great community.”

Leader’s Edge is a non-profit that focuses on the development of positive values and character traits in business leaders as well as students. In September 2012, the Leader’s Edge initiated the youth character education program by purchasing Anti-Virus materials and hiring trained mentors to serve four schools and 600 students in Tuscarawas County. The program has grown into serving 20 school districts and 2,970 students in a six-county area. It is anticipated that the program’s growth will continue and expand into all of Stark County by September 2016. The expansion will allow Leader’s Edge to offer the program to 35 school districts in a six-county area with over 7,000 students annually. For more information on the Leader’s Edge Anti-Virus program, visit www.antivirusyouth.org

Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week Aims to Educate Consumers about Scams

Identity theft is a serious crime. When a thief obtains your personal information such as your mother's maiden name, your date of birth, or your account number, they can open fraudulent credit cards, charge existing credit cards, write share drafts, open share accounts, or obtain new loans – but did you know they can also use your Social Security number to receive a tax refund or a job? It is called Tax Identity Theft and tax season is the most common time for this type of fraudulence to happen.

To educate members about this type of theft, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced that January 25 through January 29 is Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week for 2016. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has updated its tax identity theft resources page on the MyCreditUnion.gov consumer website to provide information to help credit union members understand and prevent identity theft, to protect themselves from other frauds and scams, and the steps used to report all fraudulent activity.

The Federal Trade Commission is also hosting a series of educational events online to correspond with Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week:

For more information on protecting yourself and others against identity theft, visit ftc.gov/idtheft.

What Happens When Your Debit Card Is Compromised

Finding out that your debit credit card information was compromised is unnerving. Unfortunately, this type of fraud is on the rise and there is no way to avoid it. Card compromises occur when unauthorized individuals gain access to debit card information through a merchant or card processor computer system. This is sometimes referred to as “hacking” into or installing “Malware” to capture data on a computer system. Even though a card is compromised, it does not mean there is fraudulent activity occurring within the member’s account.

DoverPhila Federal Credit Union is notified by their card processor and/or MasterCard® when there is a compromise situation. To minimize your inconvenience with compromised cards, DoverPhila will send a notification letter to the affected member that a new card has been ordered.  Within two weeks of the date of this letter, your new card should arrive in a plain white envelope.  Your compromised debit card will automatically be cancelled two weeks after the date on the notification letter; if you would like this card closed immediately, please contact the debit card department.

Your new card will be assigned a PIN (personal identification number) which, for security reasons, will arrive in a separate mailing roughly three days after the arrival of your new debit card.

For questions or additional information, please contact a DoverPhila Federal Credit Union member service representative by calling 330-364-8874.
